Frequently asked questions

Why does my Bluetooth headset sound worse than the phone's mic?

That is expected. When an app records from a Bluetooth headset, Android switches the headset into its call mode, which carries audio at phone-call quality. Transcription still works, but accuracy is usually a little lower than with the phone's own mic. For the best results in a quiet room, put the phone on the table and use its built-in mic.

How much battery does Offword use?

Realtime mode transcribes while you talk, so it keeps the processor busy and uses noticeably more battery during long sessions. Record only mode just captures audio, which is light on battery, and transcribes later when the phone is idle and charging. If you record for hours at a time, Record only (part of Pro, coming soon) is the better choice.

Bluetooth headsets add a little drain on both the phone and the headset.

What is the difference between Free and Pro?

Free has Realtime mode only: live transcription while you record, from the phone mic or a Bluetooth headset, saved as plain text files you can share. Pro (coming soon) adds Batch mode (record now, transcribe later while idle and charging, including from the upcoming Offword wearable), an encrypted searchable transcript vault, encrypted automatic backup to your Google Drive (iCloud on iOS later), voice naming for recurring speakers, and reminders and alerts generated from your transcripts on the phone.

Does Offword ever send my audio to a server?

No. Transcription happens on your phone. If you enable Pro backup, encrypted files are uploaded to your own Google Drive or iCloud, and the provider cannot read them. Nothing else leaves your device.

Where are my recordings stored?

In the app's private storage on your phone. Other apps can't read them, and they are never uploaded anywhere unless you turn on Pro encrypted backup to your own Drive or iCloud. Uninstalling Offword deletes them, so export anything you want to keep first.

How do I export a recording or transcript?

Open the recording in Offword and use the share or export option. You can send the transcript as text, or the audio file, to any app on your phone, such as your notes app, email, or a file manager. Once shared, the copy is handled by that app.

Does Offword need an internet connection?

Only to download the speech model the first time and to check offword.app for updates. Recording and transcription work offline.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login.

Is it legal to record a conversation?

It depends on where you are. Some places require everyone in a conversation to agree to be recorded. You are responsible for following the law where you live. See the terms of use; when unsure, ask before you record.

When is the iPhone version or Google Play release coming?

Both are planned. For now, Android users can install Offword from the download page.
